Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

GUYSSSSS – I loved this book so so much! This has been on my TBR forever and I don’t know why I put it off for so long. I finally read this during the most recent #SlayThatSeries readathon when Malia @ BookParadise invited me to buddy read it with her. Thanks for reading this amazing book with me Malia!

Audiobook

I listened to the majority of this on audio and I’m so glad I did – it was really well done! I LOVED the narrator – she really brought the characters to life for me. This book takes place outside of US (which is refreshing), and the narrator did a really great job with the various accents for all the characters – much better than what I would have come up with on my own. I loved this on audio so much and highly recommend the audio for both first time readers and for rereads!! It’s one of those audiobooks where I preferred listening to it over physically reading it.

World Building and Writing

The world building in this book was so unique and different from anything that I’ve read before and I LOVED it. Since this book has angels and takes place within our world, I consider it to be urban fantasy, but at the same time it read like high fantasy to me. I’m sure many of you have heard this before, but Laini Taylor has a beautiful writing style and has such a way with words. I’m not someone who goes looking for quotes in books, but this book is so quotable that even I noticed it. I had so many FEELINGS while reading this!

Characters

Laini Taylor has definitely created some unique characters in this book that have already made a special place in my heart. I love all of them so much – yes ALL of them! Karou is witty and funny and she has such a great outlook on life. I love that she is an artist and the way she has made the two very different parts of her life come together and work for her. I think my favorite part of this story was surprisingly the romance. I don’t read straight romance books and romance tends to be the least important part of a story for me, but that was so not true in this book! This is a forbidden love story and OH MAN – my stomach was all butterflies and my heart was fluttering throughout this story. I don’t know if I’ve ever enjoyed a romance as much as I enjoyed reading about this one. This romance was just beautiful and heartbreaking and just sooooo great.

Plot

Laini Taylor is a freaking magician when it comes to plot. This is one of those stories that you have A TON of questions as you are reading along. I’m someone who can get frustrated when not enough is revealed to the reader, but that is NOT the experience I had with this book. There are so many things you don’t understand as you’re going through but Laini Taylor reveals answers to you at just the right time and in just the right way. Everything she has put into the story is there for a reason! Even though I’m still full of questions at the end of this book, I have no doubt that all the answers will be revealed in time. This book is so fast paced plot-wise and one thing happens after the other – there is hardly any lull in the action. I couldn’t put this book down!

In Summary

This is one of my favorite reads this year and I can see why everyone loves this series so much. I give this book ALL THE STARS!!!! I picked up the next book right away – the series is pretty addicting and I’m so glad I picked it up and I wish I had picked it up sooner. The writing in this book is beautiful, the plot is fascinating, the characters are unique and endearing. I just can’t say enough good things about this book – if you love forbidden love, or urban (or even high) fantasy please read this!! I LOVED IT SO MUCH. PERIOD.

Omg Jade, I am so with you on this one! Laini did a fantastic job of creating this unique world, the characters, just everything. Karou is so witty and strong, and girl Akiva was soo freaking cute! This was my first time reading about chimera and angels, so it was beyond refreshing for me. I’m actually starting DOBAS tonight with a friend., and I am soooo damn excitedddd.
