It has been four months since a mysterious obsidian stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Prince Rhy was wounded, and since the nefarious Dane twins of White London fell, and four months since the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift – back into Black London.
Now, restless after having given up his smuggling habit, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks as she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games – an extravagant international competition of magic meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries – a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.
And while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night will reappear in the morning. But the balance of magic is ever perilous, and for one city to flourish, another London must fall.
I don’t even know what to say about this book because it was so good guys! I listened to most of this on audio and I highly recommend the audiobook!! I also recently listened to the first book on audio as a reread right before picking this up. Sadly, I didn’t love the narrator of the first book quite as much as the narrators for this sequel. That’s right, there are two narrators for this one – one for the male voices and one for the female voice. They are both fantastic! I loved the narrators so much that I typically chose to listen to the book over reading it physically.
When I went to the signing for this book, Victoria Schwab talked about how she likes her second books in a series to be more character focused than her first book. That definitely held true for this book. We learned so much more about all the characters and how they think – I love them all to pieces!! I especially loved learning more about the relationship between Kell and the prince, as well as his relationship with the royal family in general. UGH I love Kell so much and I just want him to feel loved and appreciated! And Lilah is so dear to me as well – I love her spunky and smart self. I can’t get enough these characters!
Like I said, I felt this second book in the series was definitely more character focused than the first book. I wouldn’t necessary call this an action packed book, but it still had enough action for me! VE Schwab is just so amazing when it comes to crafting an intricate story. I loved how she was able to weave all these different character story lines together and have them come together seamlessly at the end. I totally didn’t see the ending coming and I was so shocked when I got to the end of the book. I was seriously looking for more pages! I can’t believe she left us with a cliff hanger like that (although I shouldn’t be surprised!).
I really can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. I love the writing, the story, the characters – I love everything about this book and series. I recommend this series to any fantasy lover out there. If you love fantasy and haven’t picked up this book – what are you doing?!
